Chrome is slower than Firefox

Posted September 3, 2008 - Filed under Interesting, Uncategorized, Web Development

Well now that Chrome is out and the dust has begun to settle I thought I’d spend the time to test it using Webslug (a site I designed that does site performance comparisons).

I had been chatting to a few of the engineers at work and of course they were raving on about how fast it was. I didn’t agree, it seemed slower to me. Noticeably slower. So I pulled out Webslug and gave it a go.

Here are the results of testing two sites. One quite media rich and the other very spartan (Yahoo and Google, who else) and guess what, it’s slower than Firefox.

Empty Cache

Chrome:   au.yahoo.com (13.1s) , google.com.au (0.7s)

Firefox:    au.yahoo.com (3.2s) , google.com.au (0.7s)

Full Cache

Chrome:  au.yahoo.com (3.0s) , google.com.au (0.4s)

Firefox:   au.yahoo.com (2.9s) , google.com.au (0.4s)

As you can see Firefox is a lot quicker on an empty cache but loses its lead quite dramatically on a full cache.  The tests were performed a number of times using Webslug and then averaged.  The most interesting thing to come out of this is that Google Chrome is actually slower on Google’s own site.

Chrome is a very nice browser. I really hope Google does manage to take away market share from IE. I think a lot of users could benefit from a nice, simple and easy to use browser that isn’t IE.

Just a disclaimer now regarding the tests: Webslug uses your browser to test page load time. Your results will vary based on your internet connection, the speed of your computer, the number of apps you have open, the weather and yes…even the browser used. So please don’t flame me if your mileage does vary.

You suck .. where the entire web talks about how fast chrome is just to be different you decide to put up something that downgrades google…. Stop writing stuff like that .. the internet is for nice people and stop this!!

All your internet belongs to Google!

I have installed Google Chrome and found browsing fun with its simple Gtalk like Simplicity. I’ll stick with FireFox for now until Chrome gets some useful plugins to enhance it.

I agree. I noticed right away it was much slower than Firefox. I figured since it’s new and loading pages for the 1st time it would improve with time. Also, it’s a beta so I feel obligated to use it to help with improvements but I keep thinking of my Firefox just sitting there with loads of speed and not being used.

I dunno.. jus read this article: “Speed test: Google Chrome beats Firefox, IE, Safari”, by cnet news: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10030888-92.html

Even if chrome is faster (most say it is) the difference in speed isn’t dramatic enough or even valuable enough to switch to it from Firefox. What about all the marvy widgets I use as an integral portion of firefox? I couldn’t do without those. You don’t pick a restaurant based solely on the speed of delivering the food to your table.

I figured I would do the same test, but I noticed something. Yahoo is pulled images and source for several different sources. The speed of that has little to do with the browser, it has more to do with the responsiveness of the various servers.

So, instead of testing Yahoo and Google, I tested Youtube and Google, since both of them host all of their own content, and would have similar response rates. For Youtube, the average in Chrome was around 1.75 seconds to load the page, in Firefox, it was almost 2 seconds.

Google was a little different. They both ended up with a similar average, but Chrome showed a lower bottom end. I would conclude that this is because of my network speed, and Chrome is actually rendering faster.

The real test would be to do the same test with various sites hosted locally, so that you can eliminate any variance in network load.

Maybe my Toshiba laptop just likes Chrome better. It was so slow with Firefox (don’t even bring up IE) that I was making plans on taking it to the shop. I loaded Chrome yesterday, and I think I have a new computer. WOW!

badboyz September 4th, 2008

As a first impression, I have found Chrome to be like the chrome on old autos. A bit thin, subject to scuffing and not much more than good looking.

Thus far. IE and Firefox both seem to beat it in speed and usefulness. Maybe that will change, but I will probably wait until it is a better platform.

I personally find firefox much faster. And why do all of these responses sound like ads to me? Lets see if my message mysteriously disappears like when you dis a video on youtube.

Yo browser is so fat that, when you hit the back button, it beeps.

Adriaan September 4th, 2008

Chrome is noticeably faster than Firefox on my PC
Love it. Firefox is still my favorite though

Actually Chrome is faster than all other browsers EXECUTING JavaScript code as there is a new way to process the primitive data in addition to the multi threading support. If you load for example a Flex application the performance is similar to Firefox.

Sean September 4th, 2008

You guys Chrome might be nice and Firefox might have something going. They don’t hold a candle to OPERA. I loaded virgin in less than 1 second each. Cached was even faster. BLOATWARE is the new M$ OS for browsers.

Tom Fields September 4th, 2008

I found that chrome dosen’t render video’s and the sliding picture thing on my space worth a flip. The bookmarks thing is hard to get used to ..you have to goto a page instead of just clicking a icon.

Over all it seems faster but for now till they get the myspace and video issues worked out firefox it is for me.

IE I hate anyway and safari was slow for me also.

Batwing September 4th, 2008

How can anyone begin a post with “You suck” and end it with “the internet is for nice people” and expect anything other than to be thought a moron?

O.Z September 4th, 2008

hey this is some interesting stuff. i use opera web browser and as far i know its better than IE. i will appreciate if someone can tell me if there is any need for me to switch from opera to either of the two - firefox or chrome. thx.

Sean September 4th, 2008

Don’t bother leaving OPERA. You will be leaving the best browser currently made.

webug September 4th, 2008

Yeah, well… ok I took Chrome for a spin yesterday too. First impression was I was actually missing something, but that’s just ‘coz I am used to some clutter around the websites. Took me a little getting used to but simplistic is very fun! But there was something that started to bother me a little: Chrome seemed to constantly access my HDD even when my surfing was idle. I had FF running at tjhe same time and it did not do that. So I wonder what is going on. Could it be that Chrome slows down my computer too? (I run a trusty Toshiba Portege 4010 on XP and 75m MB RAM) What does you think?

The day Microsoft will create a product that does not suck, is the same day they start manufacturing vacuum cleaners.

JDK September 4th, 2008

Stop being Firefag. I find Chrome better than Firefox and that’s all that matters. In addition, its still on BETA!

Hoang September 4th, 2008

The first thing i notice about Chrome is that the layout is very nice, sharp and didn’t take up a lot of space. Second, the loading speed is just extraordinary, very fast. But I still prefer using Firefox for now, Chrome currently doesn’t have any useful addons and the zoom function just bad. Firefox has the best zoom function out there now. Waiting for Chrome with a better zoom function.

crystal September 4th, 2008

does anyone know how to make it so that when I open a new tab on chrome, it goes straight to my homepage rather than showing me my most used websites??

DB September 5th, 2008

I agree with the author Google Chrome is loading slower than Firefox by faster than IE. It seems than Google Chrome is similar to IE in that it waits to display the web page until it’s completely loaded.

However, it’s faster than IE, free and standards compliant. Good job Google!!!

George Toms September 5th, 2008

Google Chrome is really fast!
Now I can sort 200,000 records inside of Browser (Chrome) just in 1 sec. (Faster than Microsoft Excel):
