Sculpture by the sea
Yes people it’s back on. Spring, open air, the ocean and sculptures. What could be better?
For those of you who don’t know Sculpture By the Sea is an annual event held in spring every year in Sydney. Hundreds of sculptures are placed along the famous Bondi to Bronte seaside walk and hundreds of thousands of people come to look at them over a period of two weeks.
For Sydney siders this has to be the biggest art event of the year. Especially for such a superficial city as ours.
I have to admit I haven’t really enjoyed Sculpture by the Sea for a while now. The crowds are ridiculous, the sculptures repetitive (mostly the same “artists” over and over again). That being said, I used to love it and I do still look forward to it. I’m taking next Monday off to try and revive my enthusiasm for it. Who knows, maybe Banksy will turn up and install a covert sculpture.
I think everyone should go at least once and experience the exhibition. If you have any doubts, have a look at these wonderful photos from previous years.

I’ll be documenting my day out at great expense using my 30 year old 8mm camera, digitising it and sharing it around. The low-def of 8mm sets a nice contrast against the ever clearer digital HD of today. Hey who knows, I might make a mix up “tape” of HD and 8mm if my other half gets me the camcorder I’ve been begging for.
Who knows, there may be something this year that saves the event from becoming the McDonalds of art events.

Is that a hint to buy you a camcorder? hmmm
It may be a hint….very subtle one.
